James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart, 1833-64, Confederate cavalry commander
in the U.S. CIVIL WAR. He was known for bold raids of reconnaissance;
his circuit of Gen. MCCLELLAN's Union army (June 1862) and his foray
to the rear of John Pope's forces (Aug. 1862) provided Gen. LEE with
invaluable information. He fought at the battles of BULL RUN (1861)
and FREDERICKSBURG (1862) and commanded at CHANCELLORSVILLE.
His greatest cavalry battle was at Brandy Station (1863).
He was mortally wounded (1864) at Yellow Tavern.
